Making Strides Against Breast Cancer HistoryMaking Strides Against Breast Cancer is scheduled in 90 cities across the country and is a non-competitive walk designed to heighten community awareness about breast cancer and to raise funds for breast cancer research and local education programs and patient services. The New Mexico walk takes place along the beautiful Rio Grande River and has been well attended for the past nine years.
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. In New Mexico alone, almost 1,000 women will be diagnosed with the disease while almost 200 will die in the year 2008. Thanks to early detection, the death rate from breast cancer is beginning to decline and we need your support to keep the momentum to find a cure going strong.
All of the funds raised through Making Strides Against Breast Cancer are dedicated to breast cancer control and each dollar will directly benefit your local American Cancer Society’s efforts to fight breast cancer through research, education, early detection, patient support and advocacy.
Our local walk is the largest in New Mexico and almost raises $600,000 dollars. Albuquerque’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer was recognized nationally as being the 6th largest walk per capita in the United States. What is even more remarkable is the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Reinvestment plan program. This program allows monies raised from the walk to be reinvested in participating communities, which is then managed by New Mexico Department of Health Breast and Cervical Early Detection Program. In the past two years the reinvestment program was able to grant a total of $200,000 for underserved women. As you can see Albuquerque is fight back against breast cancer.
